thornton affordable housing
This 128-unit, affordable housing project is located along Thornton Avenue and Post Street in Fremont, California. The project includes a new streetscape, a large entry patio, courtyard space with play and lounging, a podium deck, and a rear planting area on the second floor. Landscape amenities include permeable paving, pollinator planting, a barbecue and outdoor kitchen space, informal and natural play spaces, a podium garden with large tree plantings and causal seating for residents. The design and forms of the gardens are drawn from the fractured nature of the east bay fault lines and patterning in the native soil. Elements such as raked concrete, angled steel planters, the use of granite benches, local gravels and stones are balanced with softer, native planting and butterfly gardens. This project is currently under planning review.
